A title insurance company alleges it was deceived into wiring more than $4.1 million in real estate proceeds to a fraudulent account. According to court filings, unauthorized access to one or more parties’ computers allowed fraudulent communications to be sent during a remote closing. With heavy reliance on email and phone, the deception went undetected until after funds were transferred.

The case serves as a stark reminder that cyber and social engineering risks are embedded in even routine transactions.
